The Lunch Ladies Visit Saravanaa Bhavan Restaurant
By Susan Roper and Fran Banner
We heard about this restaurant from a business associate, and are we glad we did!
Saravanaa Bhavan is in the Woodside Plaza at Finch and McCowan. Don’t go to the food court; this is a full sit-down restaurant that serves wonderful southern Indian vegetarian dishes, including dosas. While the food was somewhat spicy, the flavours were delicious. We certainly didn’t miss having meat in our dishes.
We had given our order and were just settling in when it arrived – we’ve never had such fast and efficient service anywhere else! There was a huge pitcher of water and two glasses (all stainless steel) ready for us, just in case we got a “hot” piece. The plating was also stainless steel and had small pockets on the side of the plate that held the chutneys. Very efficient.
Susan chose the buffet, which included plain dosa, poori, vada, potato marsala, (very good), two different chutneys, white rice and more for only $12.99. You can tell it was very good; she had two helpings.
Fran had the masala dosa, which was a thin rice and lentil crepe stuffed with mashed potatoes, for $9.99 It was huge and came with three different chutneys and ghee.
We estimate that the restaurant can hold 70 – 90 people. This is a very popular restaurant, with people from all walks of life enjoying the food. We also noticed they had hand-washing stations for customers to use, as a lot of the foods are eaten with the hands rather than with a knife or fork.
Our experience was absolutely wonderful. We would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant and give it five thumbs up!
