Committee Chair: Arlen Leeming
Scarborough has vast green space at its disposal for use, and it also presents a great opportunity for recreation, ecosystem enhancement, and new program creation. During the public consultations of the Scarborough Renewal Campaign, residents expressed a desire for using park spaces as community hubs of activity. Residents also expressed that they are interested in discussions about the future of their natural areas and would like to find ways to participate.
The objectives of the SCRO Natural Environment Committee are to:
- Host outdoor meetings in Scarborough’s parks. Meetings throughout the summer will be held outdoors, so that Scarborough’s natural wonders can be explored.
- Promote Scarborough’s natural wonders. Scarborough has fantastic natural spaces, including the Scarborough Bluffs and Rouge Park, as well as many hidden gems. We’d like to feature Scarborough’s natural wonders in our newsletter, and promote great local events.
- Provide input into environmental assessments and plans. Our committee receives presentations about Scarborough projects, including the Scarborough waterfront trail, renewal of Morningside Park and renewal of the hydro-corridor. SCRO will find opportunities to participate as a stakeholder in the public consultations and will promote them in their newsletter.
- Advocate for the development of a Scarborough specific ‘Integrated Community Sustainability Plan’. Scarborough needs a long-term vision for environmental sustainability to ensure protection of its watersheds for generations to come.
