Economic Development in Scarborough is paramount to future growth and prosperity. The Scarborough Renewal Campaign engaged the community in discussions on how the business community could attract new head offices and new businesses in order to create employment opportunities for Scarborough residents.
The objectives of the SCRO Economic Development Committee are to:
- Advocate for municipal jobs in Scarborough. SCRO is advocating that 3,000 well-paying, professional City staff positions be transferred to the Scarborough Civic Centre and nearby offices. We are hopeful that if the City of Toronto shows leadership by bringing employment to Scarborough Centre, that businesses will follow and locate corporate headquarters in the area.
- Advocate for a Scarborough-specific economic development plan for integration into Toronto’s Official Plan. A Scarborough-specific economic development plan would involve comprehensive public consultation and will provide cohesion between economic and suburban planning. We strongly feel that Scarborough needs a vision for economic growth and we feel that measurable targets for job creation should be established. It is time for Scarborough to shift from a retail economy to one that is more diversified and includes more professional, technical and manufacturing jobs. The economic development plan should align Scarborough’s workforce with a local strategy for economic growth and job creation. We need a plan for creating opportunities for the skilled, talented and passionate workforce of Scarborough in Scarborough.
- Develop the “Scarborough Advantage” promotional material. Our committee wants to find new ways to attract new head offices and investments to enhance employment opportunities in Scarborough. Scarborough has much to offer investors, and our committee is exploring ways to develop promotional material that highlights the “Scarborough Advantage”. We need to showcase our land development opportunities, great neighbourhoods and schools, diverse people, fantastic restaurants and natural wonders to encourage businesses to invest in Scarborough.
